Job Description

Full-Time Construction & Property Project Manager – McLean, VA | Extensive Nationwide Travel

  • Location: Based in McLean, VA; local candidates preferred; however, heavy travel involved
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, approximately 40 hours per week, with flexibility for travel, overtime, and evening or weekend emergencies
  • Compensation: $125,000–$150,000 annually, depending on experience
  • Benefits: Full benefits package
  • Travel: Heavy nationwide travel required; candidates must be highly flexible and available to travel as property and project needs dictate

A private family office is seeking an experienced Construction & Property Project Manager to oversee maintenance, repairs, and construction projects across a portfolio of approximately 20 private properties nationwide. The portfolio includes the primary residence, five rental properties, four family-occupied residences, and additional properties on the Eastern Shore and in other locations.

Extensive travel is a central requirement of this position. While based in McLean, VA, this individual must be comfortable traveling frequently throughout the United States to inspect properties, oversee projects, coordinate vendors, and address maintenance needs. Travel schedules and the length of stays will vary according to the work required. Candidates must have significant flexibility to accommodate changing priorities, overnight stays, and travel on short notice when necessary.

The ideal candidate is a proactive, knowledgeable professional who understands the standards required to maintain luxury homes and can recognize quality workmanship. This person should bring strong project management experience, practical knowledge of residential maintenance, and the ability to establish systems and follow projects through to completion across multiple locations.

Initially, the manager will work closely with the Director of the Family Home Office, reviewing plans, recommendations, and expenditures during the training period. As familiarity and trust develop, the manager will assume greater autonomy and take ownership of property maintenance and project oversight, reducing the Director’s involvement in day-to-day coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage a comprehensive preventive maintenance schedule for all properties, accounting for each home’s systems, seasonal needs, location, and occupancy.
  • Travel extensively nationwide to conduct inspections, supervise work, meet contractors, and manage projects on-site.
  • Coordinate routine services, including gutter cleaning, refrigerator coil cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, HVAC servicing, and other recurring maintenance.
  • Identify maintenance concerns, prioritize repairs, and recommend improvements that preserve the condition and quality of each property.
  • Manage construction, renovation, and repair projects from initial planning through completion, overseeing schedules, budgets, vendors, and workmanship.
  • Obtain and compare bids, evaluate scopes of work, and recommend qualified contractors and service providers.
  • Vet vendors by checking references and verifying appropriate insurance and licensing.
  • Build and maintain reliable vendor relationships in each property’s local market.
  • Schedule and supervise contractors, monitor progress, and confirm that completed work meets the family’s standards.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs within personal expertise, engaging qualified professionals when specialized work is required.
  • Maintain organized records of maintenance schedules, service history, warranties, project expenses, and vendor information.
  • Provide clear updates to the Director of the Family Home Office and follow established approval procedures.
  • Coordinate work around family occupancy and rental schedules to minimize disruption.
  • Adjust travel plans and work schedules as priorities change, including responding to urgent property issues and occasional evening or weekend emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in construction project management, residential renovations, property maintenance oversight, or a closely related role.
  • Experience with luxury residences and an understanding of high-quality finishes, workmanship, and care standards.
  • Strong working knowledge of residential systems and preventive maintenance.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple properties, projects, and vendors across different locations.
  • Experience obtaining bids, evaluating contractors, overseeing budgets, and verifying work quality.
  • A highly flexible approach to frequent nationwide travel , including overnight stays, varying trip lengths, and short-notice travel when needed.
  • The ability to work independently, identify needs, establish priorities, and follow through without constant direction.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with discretion and professionalism when working in private homes and a family office.
  • Willingness to perform appropriate maintenance tasks personally while recognizing when specialized expertise is necessary.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel regularly between properties.
  • Flexibility for occasional overtime and evening or weekend emergency availability.

This is an opportunity for a capable, self-directed professional who enjoys hands-on property oversight, takes pride in doing work correctly, and is comfortable with the substantial travel demands of managing a nationwide portfolio.
