Job Summary

Renters’ Rights of Tennessee (RRTN), a program of the Nashville Hispanic Bar Association Foundation, is seeking a dedicated and passionate attorney for the Eviction Right to Counsel Program. The Eviction Right to Counsel Program is a grant-funded initiative that provides high-quality, free legal assistance to low- and middle-income renters facing eviction and housing insecurity in Nashville. The attorney will defend low and middle-income households facing eviction in Davidson County General Sessions Court. The attorney will work closely with social workers, paralegals, and other RRTN employees to ensure that low- and middle-income, immigrant, and other marginalized renters have meaningful access to justice in Davidson County.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Representing low- and middle-income renters facing eviction in Davidson County General Sessions Court
  • Representing renters in grievance and subsidy termination hearings at the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency and other administrative agencies
  • Providing high-quality and compassionate legal advice to renters facing eviction
  • Occasionally participating in community education initiatives, legal clinics, administrative advocacy, and impact litigation, as determined by management
  • Collaborating with social workers, paralegals, interns, administrative staff, and other RRTN employees
  • Assisting with tracking case outcomes
  • Maintaining accurate and timely client and timekeeping records
  • Performing additional duties consistent with the scope and goals of the program

Qualifications

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) (required)
  • Admitted to practice law in Tennessee or eligible for practice pending admission. Recent law graduates sitting for the July bar exam are encouraged to apply.
  • Spanish language proficiency is required for this position. Fluency in Spanish is very strongly desired.
  • Experience in food service, retail, or community organizing is strongly desired
  • Passionate about housing justice, collective liberation, and social equity
  • Resourceful, communicative, and adaptable in the face of stress and change
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively on a multi-disciplinary team
  • Comfortable working in diverse cultural settings; respectful and empathetic toward all communities
  • Compassionate and committed to serving historically underserved communities
  • Strong communicator; self-motivated and eager to learn
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and legal case management systems
